Why a Tier System?

The mission of the tiered mentorship system is to provide aspiring medical professionals with a supportive network of mentors who can provide valuable guidance and advice at each stage of their journey. By connecting individuals with mentors who are one or two stages ahead of them, we aim to make it easy for mentees to receive personalized guidance from someone who has recently navigated the same challenges they are facing.

Our mentorship system also emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships between mentors and mentees. As mentees progress through each stage, they have the opportunity to continue building on the relationships they have formed with their mentors and to graduate to the next tier of the mentorship program. This not only provides continuity and stability for the mentee but also allows them to continue to receive guidance and support from a trusted mentor who knows their strengths, weaknesses, and goals.

Overall, the tiered mentorship system is designed to be accessible, supportive, and collaborative. We believe that by fostering meaningful connections between aspiring medical professionals and experienced mentors, we can empower the next generation of medical professionals to achieve their goals and make a positive impact in their communities. Below is a breakdown of the various tiers.

Why through Text?

At PreMedProtégé, we believe that medical education should be accessible and convenient for all students. That's why we have chosen for communication between our members to primarily be through text messaging. Texting allows for quick and easy communication, which is particularly helpful for students who are busy with their studies and extracurricular activities, as well as for mentors who are surely just as (if not more) busy. This system also provides a more casual and approachable atmosphere that encourages open and honest communication - similar to the way an older brother or older sister would nudge a younger sibling to ‘get their act together’. We have found that texting creates a more supportive and effective learning environment for our members, and we are committed to providing the highest quality mentorship in a way that is both convenient and accessible.

Additionally, texting allows us to provide more personalized and timely support to our members, as mentors can respond to their messages promptly and from anywhere. We believe that this approach fosters a more comfortable and trusting relationship between our mentors and our mentees, as they can easily and frequently reach out to their mentor whenever they need guidance or support. The mentor can respond on their own time, and the mentee has the comfort of knowing that someone will get back to them soon.

Our founder Homam Khattab vouches for this system, citing the close bonds he had with his mentors as a major reason for his belief in the process:

Ultimately, I benefitted the most from the late night texts, and the phone calls that held me accountable. I didn’t have to get charged hundreds of dollars by a consulting company; I was fortunate enough to know that my mentors were a text or phone call away, and that they themselves had been through similar struggles. And that’s what we seek to accomplish at PMP: close bonds between pre-medical and medical students at similar stages in their careers.

Why a Mentor System?

The mentor system is a unique aspect of our program that sets us apart from traditional consulting companies. We believe that students benefit greatly from working with mentors who are closer in age and experience to them. Our mentors are college students, current medical students, and even resident physicians who have recently gone through the pre-med and medical school process, and are therefore better equipped to provide relevant and timely advice. The medical school landscape changes regularly, and competition is becoming tighter. It’s important to be paired to someone that can give you advice on the most recent progressions - advice that they themselves lived through.

Unlike traditional consulting companies where clients may be matched with consultants who may have little in common with them, our mentor system allows for a deeper level of understanding and connection between mentor and mentee. Our mentors are able to relate to the challenges and experiences faced by pre-med and medical students, and can offer personalized guidance and support. We also encourage our mentors to build long-term relationships with their mentees, providing ongoing support throughout their journey to medical school and beyond.
